This is the first in a series of seminars designed to examine nursing within its
professional context. In Ethos I, the heritage and tradition of professional nursing is
explored as foundational to an understanding of contemporary nursing. Evolution of the
professions image, role and direction is discussed.

This is the second in a series of seminars designed to examine nursing within its
professional context. Concepts of personal responsibility, autonomy and authority are
explored as foundational to professionalism and professional accountability. Standards for
legal and ethical practice are emphasized.
NUR 192: Foundations of Nursing

The nursing process is introduced as a systematic approach to therapeutic intervention
with individuals adapting to stimuli. The concepts of exercise and rest, nutrition and
elimination, fluids and electrolytes, oxygen and circulation, regulation of the endocrine
system, self concept, role function, and interdependence are presented as foundational to
the curriculum.
NUR 274: Essential Pharmacokinetics for
Nursing

medications. Dosage calculation, basic pharmacokinetics, and safety implications are

This course utilizes a systematic approach to physical assessment of individuals across
the life span. The process of gathering assessment data in the four adaptive modes is
taught with emphasis on physiological integrity. Techniques of interviewing, history
taking and physical examination are introduced.

The nursing process is utilized as a systematic approach to the use of common prescription
and non-prescription medication. Emphasis is placed on nursing responsibilities related to
ongoing assessment of drug effects, analysis of corresponding diagnostic data, and
therapeutic interventions with individuals receiving drug therapies.
NUR 196/296: Foundations of Psychosocial
Nursing

The nursing process is utilized as a systematic approach to assist individuals as they
adapt in the self-concept, role function and interdependence modes. Assessment of focal,
contextual and residual stimuli within these modes will be introduced. Communication as an

NUR 298: Concepts of Role Development

This course introduces characteristics of the roles of professional nursing related to
practice, teaching, research utilization and leadership/management within contexts of
structured and unstructured settings. Content includes discussion of conceptual frameworks
as foundations for professional nursing practice and issues related to professional
socialization.
NUR 381: Ethos III

This is the third in a series of seminars designed to examine nursing within its
professional context. In Ethos III, the contextual and philosophical elements of nursing
as both a scientific and humanistic discipline are discussed. Special emphasis is placed
on the relationship between contextual and philosophical views and professional nursing
practice. Evolution of a personal philosophy and vision of the profession is fostered.
NUR 282/382: Adult Nursing I

NUR 384: Transition to Professional Nursing

Previous nursing experiences provide a basis for discussion of professional nursing
related to practice, teaching, research utilization and leadership/management within
contexts of structured and unstructured settings. Conceptual frameworks and issues
pertinent to the current environment of professional nursing practice are explored.
Personal and professional values which provide a focus for evolving professional
socialization are emphasized.

Building on the foundations of psychosocial nursing, the nursing process is utilized as a

threaten psychological and social integrity. Therapeutic interventions aimed at promoting
adaptation in the self concept, role function and interdependence modes are introduced and
refined. Concepts related to autonomy, diversity, values clarification and the
phenomenological reality of each individual are stressed.

Ethics as applied to nursing is examined both theoretically and practically. Basic
concepts associated with ethical theory are applied to moral self concept, role function,

NUR 488: Professional Nurse Practicum

Under the guidance of faculty, the student develops a plan to synthesize the roles of

In this final seminar, concepts explored previously in the series are synthesized,
culminating in the articulation by students of a personal philosophy of nursing.
