IN NURSING Nursing as a respected discipline is
vital to the health of the nation. Careers in nursing are challenging and
rewarding. They require a foundation in science, and interest in technology, a
desire to provide care to people from all socioeconomic and cultural
backgrounds, and skill in understanding human behavior and needs. The School of Nursing at Purdue Calumet
has as one of its purposes, the education of an Associate Degree nurse capable
of functioning at a beginning level of nursing. After successful completion of
the Associate Degree Program, a graduate is eligible to take the Licensing
Examination to become a Registered Nurse. The Associate Degree Program is
designed to fulfill the needs of qualified individuals who want to: (1) prepare
for a health care career in an intensive two-year period (usual length of study
is two academic years); (2) study in a university setting where intellectual and
social experiences are shared with other students; (3) participate in a
curriculum that is accredited by the State Board of Nursing and the National
League for Nursing; and (4) enroll in a program in which the student can select
to continue to work toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing after successful
completion of the Associate Degree Program. "Two Plus Two" (2+2) Concept of Nursing Education The School of Nursing provides to
qualified students a "2+2" program in nursing education. An
upper-division Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is available after completion of
the Associate Degree in Nursing and the acquisition of state licensure as a
Registered Nurse. You may select to enroll in the Baccalaureate Degree Program as
a full-time or part-time student. Many students experience the benefit of tuition
reimbursement at their place of employment while enrolled in the Baccalaureate
Degree Program in Nursing. Registered Nurses with Associate Degrees
are advancing into new areas of health care delivery and are actually involved
in health care reform. The graduate with an Associate Degree is in demand for
employment opportunities in hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient
centers, and a variety of community settings. Nurses are involved in providing
care for people from infancy to old age and from all cultural backgrounds. The
Associate Degree nurse finds flexibility and variety in the work environment as
well as salaries competitive with many health care disciplines. Complete Facilities for Clinical Experiences The School of Nursing provides on-campus laboratory experiences in hospital simulated environments. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in autotutorial instruction and state-of-the-art nursing computer laboratory experiences. Clinical nursing experiences are also obtained in several cooperating health care agencies. Area facilities which support our students’ educational process include:
